Form and Technology

Form today often emerges on the screen: command, mesh, export. The surface is clean, the decision quick, the result interchangeable. One recognises the hand of the tool, rarely that of the author. Earlier, form arose from dialogue with the material – from resistance, repetition and what the hands held to be true. Technology was never absent, yet served a stance.

This is not a plea against digital tools, but against their sole rule. Whoever only operates tools produces surfaces. Whoever masters form deploys technology deliberately and retains coherence.

At SOL LAB this question is concrete. The Aether series – Plena, Lumina, Resona – is made from translucent resin. Digital form-finding meets physical process: layers, casting, edge, light. On Lumina the traces remain readable. They are not errors, but the sentence Process becomes Form in matter. The file allows precision. The material decides what survives.

Thought in LEAN terms: first the form that carries. No glass furnace, no marble, no scent merely because it looks nobler. First stance, then material, then tool. Whoever reverses this order receives beautiful renderings and silent objects.
