Ferrari has taken its first step into electric with the Luce, and entrusted the form to Jony Ive and LoveFrom. The result is precise, rich in material, and rigorously minimal — aluminium, glass, physical controls instead of a touchscreen takeover. Ive has extended his own design coherence and put it on the road.
This is a toast to auteur design, the kind one might have hoped was extinct. Here Ive is Ive — and not Ferrari Ferrari. Ferrari has laid a cuckoo’s egg in the nest: a car that speaks Apple, yet is meant to wear the Cavallino. It works as a product. But this design stands among all existing Ferraris, not beside them. Whether it works as a Ferrari remains the real question of design criticism.
